....JI’NAN RIVER NORTH MASTERPLAN
Location: Ji’nan, China
Contribution: Masterplan, Urban Design and Industrial Positioning
Located in the province of Shandong, Ji’nan has always been known as the City of Springs. Today, the province’s capital is poised for the first time to “step to the north” across the Yellow River, creating a new sub-center which will bring young talent, industries and urban places into the fabric of the city. In the process, the Yellow river will be transformed from a barrier to a “seam” between the north and the south –integrating the old and the new- adding to the quality of environment for all residents of the city. Exemplifing 21st century urbanism, our masterplan incorporates new approaches to city-making. In the last century, planners in China and globally called for the separation of industry from urban life. Industry and economies are now being transformed by digital processes to be vastly more efficient, productive, and clean. Our model concentrates higher density mixeduse development, compact along transit lines, creating pedestrian and bike-oriented environments. In between these development spines, large areas of land are left for preservation of the Yellow River ecology, while providing spaces for recreation, cultural tourism, and advanced agricultural production.
